The site is in the Perivale neighbourhood of the London Borough of Ealing in West London. The existing small industrial business units building houses the office and storage space of a telecommunications firm. The local planning authorities rejected the original proposals for the site’s residential development. At this point, our client enlisted the help of Studio L’ght in a new design effort to create an adequate residential complex and obtain planning permission for the idea.

The location of the site is next to the Hoover Building, one of the most prominent art deco architectural buildings in the United Kingdom. Naturally, it became an inspiration for the brief in terms of how to complement its presence with our idea and effectively respond to it.

Teignmouth Court is a mixed-use building with 9 flats and 40sqm of small commercial space on the ground floor with separate access. The proposed flats include a three-bedroom family unit, two-bedrooms, one-bedrooms, and studio units with exterior balconies. The building contains shared amenity space in the rear landscaped courtyard, as well as bicycle storage for all residents.

The structure is articulated as a tiered building mass that is aligned with the neighbouring Lloyd’s Bank building. The regular white grid was inspired by the Art Deco architectural grid seen on the Hoover Building. In the setting of the neighbouring Lloyd’s bank building, glazing infill with stepped window cill and brick infill at alternate levels provides for suitable window line distribution.

Despite the site’s difficult size and heritage constraints, we were granted planning permission by the local council. The excellent urban and contextual response, as well as the modern interpretation of the art deco features, make this project a plausible proposition for our client.

We have been fortunate to have the creative freedom to not only design the architecture of the project but also delve into the interior design. This unique opportunity has allowed us to ensure a cohesive and harmonious design language between the exterior and interior spaces. By seamlessly integrating the two, we were able to create an immersive experience for our clients that follows a contemporary interpretation of the art deco style.
