The outbuilding was designed for an elderly mum in the family house’s back garden. The client wished for the spaces to receive as much natural lighting as possible in the living and sleeping spaces, despite the limited area of the site. We also took into account the ergonomics of the elderly inhabitant and designed the kitchen top, benches and bathroom etc to be perfectly suited to her needs.

The proposed granny annexe matches its neighbouring outbuildings in scale. The rear volume and front volume height is matching to its parallel neighbouring built form. This follows an architectural pattern that is forming.

We designed the granny annexe to have a private outdoor space on the side by retreating a 1.5m away from the fenceline, thereby successfully achieving a dual aspect outlook in both the living/kitchen and bedroom.

The proposed garden annexe is set against the back drop of mature vegetation of small trees and surrounded by timber fencing. We proposed for biodiverse green roofs on the flat roofs to blend into the surrounding maintaining visual garden appearance from the top, and also to compensate for the green area taken by the garden annexe footprint, providing replacement habitats for the local flora and fauna.

The small footprint of the studio meant that its spaces needed to be transformable and multi-purpose, therefore we designed closed storage spaces and furniture that can be tucked away when not in use. Windows and openings are strategically placed so as to prevent overlooking issues onto neighbours whilst maintaining a good outlook from all the living spaces.
