Alder House is a rear single storey extension and porch addition project in Knightswood, Glasgow.
The original house is an end terrace with a driveway on the side and a long, deep garden. The clients wished to extend the rear of the house to accommodate a cosy open space living room and a larger kitchen. In addition, they also asked for a new front porch to be built for an extra layer of security.
We conducted a digital measured survey of the entire property as a starting point. This was extremely helpful as it allowed us to have accurate floor plans to work from.
The clients wanted the new extension to match the existing house in materiality and massing whilst introducing some modern elements. We experimented with different roof options but eventually decided on having a gable roof extension with a full height glazed facade that frames the garden beautifully.
The original living room is converted into a sitting room for guests with a new glass double door leading into the more private living/kitchen space.
We also introduced a small toilet in the old storage space underneath the stairs with a new entrance from the sitting room.
Upon entry, a minimal long kitchen island naturally guides the sightline towards the framed landscape of the rear garden. The large glazing and two roof lights make up for a comfortable level of natural light penetration in this north-east facing space.
The end result is an open space living/kitchen/dining area with a small utility room tucked away in the corner.
We also helped the clients visualize their new spaces by showing furnitures and appliances that they had already purchased for the house in place.
