Victorian House

Conversion of Semi-detached Dwelling into Self Contained Units

Hartington 2

Project Location:

West London

Completed:

December 2021

Status:

Design & Planning

The dwelling is located in West Ealing area of the London Borough of Ealing and it’s a worn out 4 bedroom semi-detached Victorian House. Our client sought to expand the property and divide it into four self-contained units, resulting in two two-bedroom flats and two one-bedroom flats.

Working through ideas of fully retaining and utilising available space with minimal disruption to the existing structure in the property, as well as using new additions such as a double storey rear extension and converting the existing storage unit at the rear into part of the development, we were able to satisfy the brief.

The concept complies entirely with local legislation and the London Plan 2021 criteria for space, landscape, and bicycle and trash storage for all residents. To retain the residential character of the area, the exterior combines brickwork and dark metal ironwork and fittings. The interior design was centred on functional and clean, modern pleasant space design aimed at young professionals living and working in London.

Despite the site’s difficult size and heritage constraints, we were granted planning permission by the local council. The excellent urban and contextual response, as well as the modern interpretation of the art deco features, make this project a plausible proposition for our client.

We have been fortunate to have the creative freedom to not only design the architecture of the project but also delve into the interior design. This unique opportunity has allowed us to ensure a cohesive and harmonious design language between the exterior and interior spaces. By seamlessly integrating the two, we were able to create an immersive experience for our clients that follows a contemporary interpretation of the art deco style.
